1. Summary
According to author Jack Dominan, in his book “Childhood and Adolescence” (Depression, May 1982), he informs us the reasons which cause babies and adolescents depression.
Dominan informs us to think why babies have a sharp change as they are separated and reunited with mothers. For this question, Dominan reasons that the change occurred because they get contact and nurturing by a parent or caregiver. Furthermore, Dominan indicates two possible reasons that adolescents get depressed. Firstly, unlike babies, adolescents develop depressive symptoms when they leave their comfortable home for a period of time, either going to camp or boarding at schools far from their city. Secondly, Dominan demonstrates that some adolescents become depressed when they feel they are not as attractive as other youth of their age. They also feel worried that no member of the opposite gender will be attracted to them.
At the end of the chapter, Dominan mentions that it’s easier to cure depression in infants with the help of warm parents, adolescents need more medical help because they are often forced to achieve maturity before they are psychological prepared.
2. Critique
As mentioned in the chapter that depression affects both babies and adolescents. The author wants us to know the reasons they get depressed and how to cure them. He organizes his writing very well. So I can easily understand. As far as I’m concerned, this chapter of the book is very good and offers a lot of useful information that helps people more understanding with taking care of babies and adolescents. In addition, I think we under pressure are basic from school and parents because their expectations of us are much higher than we actually can achieve. We want to be good, yet everyone has their different level of abilities to accomplish certain endeavors. Obviously, the psychological pressure will be increasing and lead to depression. Therefore, all of people need to consider this problem that occurs to most of the families more and more often.
